Trespass 2006 Vintage Wines
The 2006 vintage can be characterized as a "grower's year," as vintners had to deal with a variety of Mother Nature's whims. We had quite a bit of wet weather which continued late into spring, thus delaying bud break. Boy, do we wish we had some of that rain now! Fortunately we moved into a fairly predictable summer weather pattern, complete with July heat wave. But that seemed to just move the vines along and get us back to a more normal pace for the growing season.
Harvest started for us at the very end of September, which allowed a nice, slow development of flavors and ripeness in the fruit. We once again aged the wine in French oak barrels, using just over 50% new wood. The oak barrels we use now come from four different coopers. Donny and our winemaker Kirk Venge spend a lot of time matching the type of barrel to the varietal, to really bring out the best flavor characteristics as the wines age.

Trespass 2005 Vintage Wines
The 2005 vintage can be characterized as a fun roller coaster ride in terms of the growing season. We had some record setting rains late into the spring, then enjoyed a more mild summer than usual. As we began fall and the fog and cool temperatures continued, we knew patience was key. But a lovely Indian summer weather pattern arrived ripening the fruit to excellent sugar levels and balanced acids.
In the cellar we continued with a more detailed barrel program which we had begun the prior year. We purchased six different types of French oak barrels from four different coopers. Donny works with our winemaker Kirk Venge each year to fine tune which barrels seem to complement and enhance each type of wine we make. We use a balance of 50-60% new oak each vintage, with the balance of our cooperage needs met from the barrels used in our previous vintages.
