Fall 2016

Dear Trespass Friends,

Tresspass Vineyard

The beautiful fall season is upon us and it is time to celebrate a fabulous harvest and the release of the last of our Trespass Vineyard wines from the 2013 vintage!!  The Cabernet Sauvignon, Old Vine Zinfandel, and the Rendezvous blend are ready to make their way from our cellar to yours.

Heritage and legacy are themes that resonate deeply in our business, as well as all kinds of farming.  After all we are simply stewards of our special piece of land, a responsibility Donny and I keep in our minds at all times.  Our property had been under vine for over 100 years, however when we purchased it the old "Italian field blend" varietals had been ripped out.  We were able to make rootstock and clonal selections that we felt would prosper in this unique corner of St. Helena and have been aptly rewarded!

Many of you have asked if any of our children plan to get into the wine business.  One has not fallen far from the vine.  Our son Michael has been making wine since 2010 and his brand is called MTGA.  I can't believe he just released his fourth vintage!  Check out his wonderful wines at and get a few bottles to try.  And don't miss reading his blog – I always enjoy his perspectives and his journey.  (Yes, a proud Mom moment!)  The other four in our "Brady Bunch" have now scattered in different directions but you just never know what may happen around the corner.  We are always happy to send wine care packages their way so they always have a taste of home nearby.

The 2013 is a vintage of the ages and was one of the most concentrated in quite some time.  Donny likes to say the silver lining from the drought conditions we had experienced for several years is that the wines made during this time have been richer, bolder, and more concentrated than ever.  Fortunately we have returned to a more normal weather pattern in the Napa Valley, but it is Mother Nature's annual stamp that marks each vintage as a special moment in time for Trespass Vineyard.

2013 Trespass Cabernet Sauvignon

This bold Cabernet starts out rich with black briar, dried plum and black cherry graphite, with subtle hints of clove and earth.  As Donny likes to say "jam in a glass!"  The nose of this deep wine is forever evolving.  Very detailed notes of broad, sweet plush fruit push through the front of the palate followed by smooth tannins and a very balanced acidity.  It is a tribute to a wonderful growing site and core in winemaking and overall barrel regime.

This is a generous wine that is without a doubt drinking well at the onset of its life, however I believe it will cellar beautifully for another 10-12 years.

2013 Trespass RENDEZVOUS

Always one of my most anticipated releases and one of Donny's favorites; this is the Trespass offering that we certainly work the most diligently on as well.  With careful row selection in the vineyard to the open top micro fermentations in new French Oak, the Rendezvous blend gives so much to the connoisseur.

Beginning with a deep black garnet edge viewed in the glass, sweet aromas of clove, sweet black cherry, blueberry reduction supported in the secondary wave with light oak vanillin and an exotic array of Christmas spices.  (Dana says magic!)  The mouth is full of bright, sweet red fruit ranging from maraschino cherry to more blueberry preserve.  The longer this classic bottling remains open, the more deep and brooding it becomes.

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Cabernet Franc, this will continue to evolve over the next 12 years.

2013 Trespass "Old Vine" Zinfandel

Hailing from vines planted on the Luvisi Vineyard early last century, this lovely and focused Zin is one of Napa Valley's earliest plantings that I know of and certainly the oldest that I source.

Typical to the Luvisi Veneyard's gnarly old vines are aromatics of sweet black fruit, plum, crushed herbs white pepper and camp embers.  The palate has a wonderful, full a voluptuous entry and shows further deep, dark fruit flavors, sweet vanillin and a hint of wet stone minerality.  Sip after sip the flavors build and crescendo to a huge finish with length that carries for over a minute.

Zins like these are a surreal joy to architect and create.  It's a humbling feeling and quite the honor to work with a vine that has managed to stay alive for over 100 years and few of us as winemakers have this opportunity in the face to replant Napa Valley to more popular Bordeaux varietals.  With proper aging, this wine will live to see 2030 and beyond.
